The hot air, the wind blowing sand in my face, the sun burning my skin, and the Relly
cars passing by make Mar del Plata look like a hot dessert city. Still the ocean is right
behind me and in front of me a thousand people crowd is gathered to see the symbolic
start of the Dakar Rally.
Tomorrow, with the start of the New Year, starts the Rally Dakar, when the first bike
will leave the “Base Naval” and head to Necochea. All the vehicles has to pass the
five stages in Argentina and travel over the Andes to come to Chile, where another
five stages of Chilean soil will be waiting for the competitors. The last part will
be crossing the Andes to go to Peru, where the dunes and the desert will test the
knowledge and patience of the drivers. Lima will be the final destination, and the rally
will end there on 15th of January.
Competitors from all over the world came to Mar del Plata, to compete in this Rally.
Exactly 465 racing cars, bikes and trucks enrolled in this years competition. Drivers
like Nasser saleh AL-ATTIYAH (QAT), the champion from 2011 or Vladimir CHAGIN
(RUS) champion in trucks in 2011, will soon find the route to adventure open.
It is the fourth time in row that this prestigious Rally is organized in South America.
It’s origins take us to Paris, where the first Paris-Dakar Rally was held in 1979.
Unfortunately, in 2008, due to security reasons, the competition was canceled. But the
organizers found a more secure ground and so a new tradition started.
This new ground has prepared a new challenges for the competitors. A bit of desert,
a bit of canyons and lots of mountains will make the drivers and riders use all their
straight and brains to conquer the unknown.

Very cool! So glad they have found a way to resuscitate this race! Although without Dakar playing a part, why not change the name? Why not call it the Trans-Andes or something? But I stray from the point. Love the passion of your pictures and the text.

So you'll be following the race and filing reports to FOTOJORNO, yes?
