Losing Control

Losing Control   It took from the ages of 18 to 35 for me to learn one of Life’s most valuable lessons. The day I realized that I had no control over any person or most things, is the day that I gained all of the control I would need for the rest of my life. I called it the 17 year lesson. I have never considered myself a control freak or even a creature of habit. However, while mentally strolling through my past, I realized that many of my actions and motivations for those actions were based on the “hope of controlling” the people around me.  Control not in the normal, I need to run things sense, but in the “for every action there’s a reaction” sense.  I believe that we are all guilty of it, believing that if we do enough, hope enough, pray enough, and love enough that the people in our lives will fall right into place and do what we want them to do.   Just a little background – I am an only girl in a family of 5. Not only do I hold the distinction of “reigning princess”, but also the coveted position of first born.  I was the beginning and often times the end of many things in my household. (Only my mother held greater power) As a result, I came to live an “expectant” life.  What did that mean? It meant that I grew up believing that anything I put my mind to I could achieve, and that with my “powers of persuasion” I  could get anybody to “do right” because of the limitless hours of practice I had put in with my father and brothers.  And for the majority of my life that held true.  I was an honor student and a favorite throughout my school years.  I wanted to model professionally, and became one at 17.  Every job interview that I went on was almost always followed by a job offer.  So far so good…Until LOVE entered the scene.  You know the story. Girl meets boy.  Boy chases girl.   Girl runs, boy catches, and girl falls down! Now the fun really began.   My parents always raised me to be direct, to be honest, to speak the truth, and not to be afraid.  “There is no one better than you” was a commonly repeated mantra in my house. So…
