negative space is realized in both representational and nonrepresentational art...in both 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional... pictures with the strongest depictions of negative space are those in which abstract forms that surround (create) the subject emerge to overpower the subject. eventually, they become the subject... creator / beholder / viewer...negative space is in the eye of the beholder. it is space that both forms, and is formed by (positive, primary) space. negative space comes forth when apprehennded by the viewer...whether the viewer is the creator of the composition or the beholder...
