"Irene, we are a phone call away from global nuclear meltdown." I eavesdrop from my bedroom on a beautiful October afternoon. "We loaded the missile in the silo today. The government has the launch keys."
"Students kneeling under desks is a waste of time," I hear him tell her. "You need to be in a bomb shelter deep underground." He says, "You'll see a bright flash, then that's it."
A moving van will be here Monday. We need to finish packing. Dad says we'll like Missouri. He says we'll have a two-story house and a yard. I hope they have room to put my bicycle in the moving van this time.
