He hung up

Mar 10, 2010 • 4 comments • 2780 views
At the end of a tech chat with "Taylor" of HP my mind wandered to India, then the prospect of seeing how long I could keep him engaged, with topics completely unrelated to computers. To my mind this should have gone on for at least twice as long:

Taylor : You can contact any local computer shop and ask for the Fax modem and then install.
Mark Gorney :
Thanks
Taylor :
You are most welcome.
Taylor :
Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
Taylor : Please make a note of this chat activity ID 1135532.
Mark Gorney :
If you are based in India, I need spares for old motor scooters
Mark Gorney :
And complete scooters
Mark Gorney :
From the 1960s to 80s
Taylor : Yes I am based in India, but I am sorry I don't have information about the scooters spare parts.
Mark Gorney :
Ok
Mark Gorney : Do you see many of them on the streets
Mark Gorney : ?
Taylor :
Mark, you can find the details in Google web sites where you can get all the information.
Taylor :
I am sorry that we are not supposed to give any product information other than HP stand alone desktop PC's.
Mark Gorney :
I understand.
Mark Gorney :
So you are not able to discuss world affairs, or food?
Taylor :
Yes, you are correct. It is strictly restricted so I could not help you.
Mark Gorney :
I am sad about this.
Taylor : Is there any technical issue related to the HP desktop PC's?
Mark Gorney : Sorry, what do you mean?
Taylor : I am sorry for the inconvenience that has caused to you.
Mark Gorney :
It's ok. It's not your fault.
Taylor : Thank you for understanding our limitations.
Mark Gorney :
I just wanted to present to you, that I am fond of the tapir (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapir), and the fruit bat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabat).
Taylor :
Okay.
Mark Gorney :
Normally it is not common under most circumstances that a person would be fond of both.
Mark Gorney :
Or just those two.
Mark Gorney : My uncle studied bats for a number of years, but unfortunately he passed away many years ago.
Mark Gorney : He spent a lot of time in caves.
Mark Gorney :
Many bats are now endangered, which distresses me greatly.
Mark Gorney :
They are a vital part of the ecosystem.
Taylor :
I am sorry to hear that and we should appreciate his studies on bats.
Taylor : Is there any technical issue related to the HP desktop PC's?
Mark Gorney : It is true, and thank you for pointing that out.
Taylor :
You are most welcome.
Mark Gorney :
Bats are often feared and/or misunderstood.
Mark Gorney :
I wonder how global warming is affecting them.
Taylor :
Okay.
Mark Gorney :
I guess you are not allowed to mention the temperature there now?
Mark Gorney :
Or when monsoon season is? (I forget)
Taylor :
Yes, as I have mentioned earlier that this chat support is only for the professional use and we can assist you only with the technical issues related to the HP desktop PC's.
Mark Gorney :
Do you ever wish you were free to discuss other things?
Mark Gorney :
I mean, does it bother you.
Taylor :
We have restrictions that we cannot support for any personal information and this chat support is only for the technical support.
Mark Gorney :
Yes, I was just wondering how you felt about that (sad, happy, angry, peaceful etc)?
Taylor :
It was nice chatting with you.
Taylor :
May I end the chat with your permission?
Mark Gorney :
So I guess you can't say how you feel?
Mark Gorney : You could describe it as a sensation
Mark Gorney : For example something in your chest, throat or abdomen
Taylor :
I felt very good about the bats information that you provided. How ever we are not supposed to discuss any other information on this chat tool other than technical issues related to HP desktop PC's. I am sorry for the inconvenience if this may have caused to you.
Mark Gorney :
I understand, and thanks for responding. I am glad that you very good about the bats information because I do, too. My uncle spent a lot of time in caves. And in tents. He was in tents.
Taylor :
You are most welcome and it was my pleasure in assisting you.
Mark Gorney :
Was there any specific feeling about the bats information?
Mark Gorney : A warmness perhaps? An openness?
Taylor :
I am sorry I am not allowed to discuss any personal information.
Mark Gorney : Ok. I am sorry to hear this.
Mark Gorney :
I was going to ask you about breakfast foods, but I guess I can't.
Taylor :
Yes Mark, I cannot discuss any personal information and I am really very sorry that I am not allowed to support for any personal information.
Mark Gorney :
It's ok, I understand.
Mark Gorney :
It seems a little restrictive that a person could not, for example, discuss fruit - say papaya or melon, but what can you do.
Mark Gorney : Or trains
Mark Gorney :
Or cows
Mark Gorney : Or egglant
Mark Gorney : Or wheat
Mark Gorney : Or mice
Taylor : Yes.
Mark Gorney :
Could I tell you about my aunt?
Taylor :
Sorry Mark,as I said we are not supposed to discuss about any personal information and this chat support is meant only for the technical support for the HP desktop PC's.
Mark Gorney :
We don't have to discuss her, I was just going to tell you about her.

Douglas Gorney: It's really very important.

Hmm, If you could get about 100 more in this format and capture the diverse sense of depersonalization along with the infrequent response, I sense a book project. I'd call it simply "Chats from Bangalore." Send me a signed copy when you're famous.
